We were thrilled to be in Minneapolis this weekend with Bill Mack at the unveiling of the Tom Kelly sculpture at Target Field this weekend. Congratulations to Bill on another job well done! Read about the spectacular event below.
Former Twins manager Tom Kelly honored in bronze
Tom Kelly marveled Friday evening at the large bronze statue of him that was unveiled outside Target Field.
“I guess I did manage during the steroid era,” he quipped will standing beside his over-sized image. “I just didn’t know that I took any.”
In 16 years as the Twins manager, Kelly led the team to it’s only World Series titles, in 1987 and 1991. The team is honoring the former this weekend on the 30th anniversary of its championship.
“They’re the team that got the monkey off the back of the state of Minnesota for winning that World Series,” Kelly said of the 30-year-old team.
In the sculpture, he’s wearing a familiar No. 10 jersey, since retired by the Twins, over brawny shoulders. Several of his former players watched the ceremony, as did current Twins manager Paul Molitor, who both played for Kelly and coached with him.
“I think it’s great when teams honor clubs like the ’87 team, especially for players and coaches who are old enough to remember those times and had a chance to be a witness to watching that unfold,” Molitor said. “Honoring TK with a statue, it’s the right thing.
“Personally, I’m someone who is indebted to TK for what he did for me as a manager after having a chance to coach for him and be around him the last couple of decades. He’s had probably a big an influence in this organization – especially with the championships – as anybody that you can think of.”
With a 1140-1244 career record, Kelly managed more games and won more games than any other Twins skipper. He was inducted into the Twins’ Hall of Fame in 2002.
“I’m just riding their coattails,” Kelly said of his former players. “Because they got the job done.”
